A test of spoken English will be included as an optional (component of theCollege English Test (CET)。 Some people contend that it is absolutely necessaryto hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been told many timesthat a Chinese student who has been learning English for years cannotcommunicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes even those top students whoexcel at grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to expresstheir thoughts freely when speaking. A test of spoken English will bring theimportance of speaking English to the awareness of the college students, andthus help them with their communicating skills.

On the other hand, there are also people who maintain that good reading andwriting skills would be enough for the average English learners. Collegestudents are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Anotherrequired test will only add to their burden. Also, some students may take theshortcut and only practice the questions according to the fixed format of thetest, which will not actually improve their spoken English.

I believe that a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. SinceChina will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speakfluent English is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highlycompetitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall make all efforts topractice my spoken English in the rest years in college.

Measures have been taken to help people keep awayfromthe harm of smoking. In many cities,smoking is forbidden in public places.The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere.And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes.World “No Tobacco Day” is observed every year as the biggest compaign against smoking.

As a result, they will have the same failure a period later. Some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.

Other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. After hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. Success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures.

In my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.

It is generally believed that a high diplomaguarantees a promising future. Some people identify high diplomas with profoundknowledge and exceptional competence. Companies also tend to emphasize theacademic achievement of a job candidate. Like it or not, there does exist asocial reality – the higher diplomas one gets, the more popular he becomes.

On the contrary, other people claim that a highdiploma doesn’t automatically translate into knowledge. A diploma, in theireyes, is only the acknowledgment of one’s educational experience rather than aguarantee of one’s ability. Therefore, we can never measure the depth of one’sknowledge by the grade of one’s diploma. Besides, many knowledgeable peopledon’t have a high diploma. Take Bill Gates for example. His dropping out ofcollege cannot deny the fact that he is one of the world’s most learned men.

So I must say no one should ever equate adiploma with knowledge, because a diploma is nothing but a proof of ashort-term study while genuine knowledge needs one’s lifelong devotion.
